Season of Sharing helps mom and son move into new apartment

Wrapped up in a pile of pillows and blankets, the first night Megan Rhodes and her son Drake Rhodes spent in their new apartment felt like a “campout on the carpet.”

When they moved into the apartment in September, Rhodes, 26, had about $50 left in her bank account, no furniture, except for two televisions, and her 8-year-old son, who recently contracted COVID-19, to care for.

This apartment is one of many places they have lived over the years since moving to Sarasota from Big Pine Key.

After finding housing through the Salvation Army’s Faith Program, then to an apartment where she was evicted in 2018, then to Harvest House’s shelter and finally to a family living program at Harvest House, the Rhodes have had to get rid of most of their belongings over and over. They have had to pack up what is left into their van and start new again every few years.
