Chavonna Sheffield is the Strauss Initiative Consultant at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. With a background in education, project management, and leadership, Chavonna will work closely with the Community Impact Team to develop a strategic plan for The Ira and Patricia Strauss Fund for Children’s Literacy.
Prior to joining the Community Foundation in 2019, Chavonna explored a career in education, teaching at various middle and high schools in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and New York City. Retaining her strong focus on education, Chavonna later turned to project management, first taking on an equal education access program called METCO at Wellesley High School in Massachusetts. As a project manager for Pittsburgh Public Schools, Chavonna developed parent engagement workshops and professional learning workshops for district and school leaders, teachers, and academic coaches, in addition to evaluating a behavior management program used by the district at its K-8 schools.
Locally, Chavonna has worked with Emma E. Booker Elementary School to create a culturally-responsive afterschool program called ASALH Academics, focusing on African-American History and Literature.
Chavonna holds a B.A. in Psychology from Denison University, a teaching certification specializing in social studies from the University of Pittsburgh, and a M.A. in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Outside of work, Chavonna enjoys practicing yoga and participating in social justice initiatives.
