Blog: Relief and Recovery Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County Receives Outpouring of Support in Storm’s Wake

The sun shines brightly on our coast again, and we are hoping all our friends and nonprofit partners are safe and sound after the wake of Hurricane Irma. While we were spared the worst of the storm, a significant number of emergencies and needs have arisen from the damage, especially for our nonprofit partners and the beneficiaries they serve. We know there will be short- and long-term relief efforts to address the needs that arose from Irma's impact, and the Community Foundation’s Hurricane Irma Relief and Recovery Fund is active and ready to help.

As we watch in disbelief at the catastrophic flooding in the Houston area, our first instinct as Americans is to ask "how can we help?" Community Foundation Announces $1 Million Gift Towards New Players Centre for Performing Arts Complex

The Players Centre for Performing Arts received a $1 million gift toward its new state-of-the-art complex in Lakewood Ranch. The donation is the lead gift since the theatre announced plans last year to sell its current property and move to Lakewood Ranch’s newest village, Waterside, in Sarasota County.

Masala Giving Circle Grants Funds to Support the Lives of Young Girls

On May 15, the Masala Giving Circle, a philanthropic organization of African-American women, held a Grant Awardee Ceremony at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. This year the grant award was for $2,500.00 and was awarded to Five Pearls of Excellence, a mentoring organization lead by professional women working with young girls.

2016 Giving Challenge Raises $13.4 Million for Area Nonprofits

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s 2016 Giving Challenge has raised more than $5.6 million through 63,567 gifts, with an added $7.5 million in matching funding from The Patterson Foundation. More than $200,000 in grant prizes from partner foundations will be awarded to the organizations receiving gifts from the highest number of individual donors, organizations with the highest total of returning dollars and the highest total of new dollars, and a variety of other “Best Of” prizes. In total, $13,386,909 was raised to support 559 local organizations located in or serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties on Sept 20 & 21, noon to noon.

Since 2012, our region has proven itself as a force in philanthropy and donors have shown their love for local nonprofit organizations by providing more than $15 million in unrestricted funding to support their missions during the Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s Giving Challenge.

More than 500 donations ranging from $5 to $20,000 were received on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 for the Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s Giving Tuesday challenge for the Season of Sharing campaign, raising more than $200,000 together with matching dollars.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s 2015 Giving Challenge has raised $3,844,839 through 36,417 gifts, with an added $2,830,000 in matching funding from The Patterson Foundation. In total, $6,674,614 was raised to support 449 local organizations located in or serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties.
