CFSC Awards $481,950 in College Scholarships

Nearly 250 graduating high school seniors from Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte Counties received scholarships from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County this spring, totaling $481,950 in funding. 

“For many of our donors, there is no greater joy than knowing bright local students will have the ability to make their mark in the world – leaving our community a better and brighter place – because of the choices open to them through a college education,” said Roxie Jerde, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

Each of the more than 65 unique scholarship funds at the Community Foundation recognizes a donor’s dream of making higher education possible for deserving students. This year’s scholarships were made possible through the following funds held at the Community Foundation:

  • Roland and Emily Abraham Educational Fund, in memory of Emily Abraham: $40,000 
  • Karen Bogues Community Service Award Scholarship Fund: $500 
  • Marvin and Rosaline Brandau Scholarship Fund: $25,500 
  • Dr. H. Thomas Byron Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund: $700 
  • Chris Craft/OMC Scholarship Fund: $2,200 
  • Community Foundation Scholarship Fund: $2,000 
  • Saul H. & JoAnne Coplan Scholarship Fund: $5,200
  •  Jane T. & Robert V. Corning Scholarship Fund: $38,000 
  • Zora E. Coxe & Charlotte M. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund: $750 
  • H. K. and Ruth K. Daniels Scholarship Fund: $17,000 
  • Father Connie Dougherty Memorial Scholarship Fund: $30,000 
  • Dr. Shirley Ford Scholarship Fund: $4,500 
  • Mary M. and George H. Hammill Scholarship Fund: $1,250 
  • Margaret "Jill" Jillson Scholarship Fund: $5,000 
  • Jason Kessler Memorial Scholarship Fund: $1,100 
  • Thomas J. Lehnen & Patricia A. Lehnen Scholarship Fund: $1,500 
  • Clifford J. and Mildred R. Marlow Scholarship Fund: $850 
  • McCauley/Brown Fund: $15,500 
  • Murphy Family Scholarship Fund: $3,500 
  • Nethercott Scholarship Fund: $5,750
  • Allen Wirtz Nobbe & Jo Bowen Nobbe Scholarship Fund: $128,500 
  • Rosemary and Lou Oberndorf RCLA Town Hall Scholarship Fund: $20,000 
  • Ellis K. and Jane R. Reinach Scholarship Fund: $1,400 
  • Millie Rice Scholarship Fund: $27,000 
  • Edward K. Roberts Fund: $18,000 
  • Shannon Staub Excellence in Leadership Scholarship Fund: $500 
  • Sarasota Architectural Foundation – Paul Rudolph Scholarship Fund: $5,000 
  • George and Karla Sherburne Educational Fund: $14,000 
  • Robert H. & Inger Bagger Stovall Most Improved Graduating Senior Scholarship Fund: $1,250 
  • Dorothy B. Templeton Scholarship Fund: $22,500
  • Joe Turnesa Scholarship Fund: $8,000 
  • James Franklin & Dorothy J. Warnell Scholarship Fund: $35,000

Each year, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County also awards scholarships to adult learners, those returning to college or vocational school after being out of high school for a number of years.
