Community Foundation of Sarasota County Exceeds $1 Million in Immediate Impact Grants
By / June 2, 2016

April 18, 2016 – Since 2012, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County has awarded $1,005,964 in Immediate Impact Grants to local nonprofit organizations to address urgent and emergency needs, so that the unexpected obstacles that nonprofits experience don’t halt the important work they do for the community.

At any time throughout the year, local nonprofits with a profile in The Giving Partner, an online knowledge base of local nonprofits, can request up to $5,000 for an immediate need. An advisory committee—including Community Foundation staff members and one community member—meets monthly to review applications. If approved for full or partial funding, the grant may be distributed within a few weeks.

“We’re excited to have reached this milestone in investments to address critical needs in our community,” says Roxie Jerde, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. “By using information from the grant application and the organization’s profile in The Giving Partner to evaluate the nature, urgency and severity of the request, as well as the organization’s accountability, our committee can make wise and timely decisions. This streamlined process enables nonprofits to address urgent demands as they arise without creating long-term, negative consequences or interrupting the services they are providing our region.”

The Immediate Impact Grant process was established in 2012, after the Community Foundation recognized the challenge nonprofits have in finding dollars for reactive solutions to timely needs. Donors who practice planned, strategic giving often direct their contributions to attractive and preemptive programs and projects, and traditionally, many foundations’ grant cycles only arise one or two times each year and regularly take months to process.

“Over a year ago, the Community Foundation provided us funding for a free, walk-in medical clinic to our patients. The clinic became so popular that some nights we ended up having to turn people away at the door who had no where else to go,” says George Forcier, Board Chair of Good Samaritan Pharmacy. “We needed to purchase equipment for another exam room, but being in the middle of our budget cycle would require us to wait almost a year until we were even able to know if we could afford it. After learning about the Immediate Impact grant offered by the Community Foundation, the convenient and rapid process helped us quickly receive the additional funding we needed so that our patients could get the care they desperately needed. The grant literally helped save lives.”
