Anonymous Donor Awards $25,000 to Stars and Stripes Foundation
An anonymous donor has granted $25,000 to the Stars and Stripes Foundation, a fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County created by the Military Officers Association of Sarasota and The Pops Orchestra, for the organizations’ successful community Flag Day event on June 14 of this year.
The free musical event attracted a crowd of approximately 2,000 and focused on the history of the American flag, including music by The Pops Orchestra, a presentation by Vane Scott III, and a formal Flag Retirement and Retreat Ceremony overlooking the National Cemetery.
The anonymous donor made the gift to acknowledge the collaborative effort of two all-volunteer organizations, to seed dollars for future events at Patriot Plaza, and to support the Military Officers Association of Sarasota as it works locally and nationally to spread its Flag Initiative,” said John Annis, senior VP of Community Investment at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
“This impactful gift to the Stars and Stripes Foundation will support local programs and activities that honor our nation’s veterans, inspire patriotism and embrace freedom,” said Tom Piazze of the Military Officers Association of Sarasota, serving as the program director of the “Celebrating the Stars and Stripes” event and chairperson of the Stars and Stripes Foundation.
“It’s meaningful to know that there are others in this community who share our pride in the origin, history, traditions and ideals represented by our nation’s flag.”
Jack Barnett, Pops Orchestra board member, worked together with Piazze and others to plan the event.
“Since the Patriot Plaza opened last year, the Pops Orchestra has looked forward to performing in such a special place,” said Barnett. “We look forward to many more joint programs that highlight our country’s rich heritage of patriotic music. “
