CFSC Elects New Board Members, Officers
By Murray Devine / July 8, 2013

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County named Patrick Dorsey and Austin Nadwodny to its Board of Directors. Dorsey has served as the publisher of the Herald-Tribune Media Group for nearly a year; previously, he served as the president and publisher of the Tallahassee Democrat. Nadwodny, a 10th grader at Sarasota Military Academy, is a graduate of the Community Youth Development (CYD) STAR leadership program, of which CFSC was instrumental in providing start-up funding and continues to support.

The Community Foundation also named its officers: Philip A. Delaney, Chair; Patricia Courtois, Secretary/Vice Chair; Orion Marx, Vice Chair; and Vicente Medina, Treasurer.

Dorsey has a history of nonprofit service. He currently serves on the Board of United Way Suncoast, Sarasota Area. While living in Tallahassee, he served on the boards of the United Way of the Big Bend and the Community Foundation of North Florida. He also served on the board and executive committee of the Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce.

Nadwodny, who serves as a “student trainer” – a curriculum facilitator and role model – for the students enrolled in the current CYD STAR class, already has a year of Board experience under his belt, with the Child Protection Center in 2012-2013. He also volunteers at Women’s Exchange. He is a Corporal in the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Cadet Explorer Program. He was promoted from Cadet to Private at SMA before even receiving his uniform – at SMA, this is a highly celebrated accomplishment. His goal is to attend West Point Military Academy and be an Army Ranger.

“We are pleased to welcome Pat and Austin to our Board,” said Community Foundation of Sarasota County president and CEO Roxie Jerde. “Pat’s background in newspaper publishing and finance, combined with his past board service with the Community Foundation of North Florida, makes him a valuable asset to our board. While he is relatively new to our community, his commitment has been demonstrated through our collaborations resulting in the successful Season of Sharing campaign and 36-Hour Giving Challenge. And what a fine young man Austin is – we have so appreciated the intelligent and enthusiastic participation of our CYD STAR graduate board members. Austin's accomplishments at Sarasota Military Academy and in our community are impressive."

Pat received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Old Dominion University, served as an auditor with The Auditor of Public Accounts for the Commonwealth of Virginia, ending up as a certified public accountant in Virginia. He entered the world of journalism on the finance side, working as an internal auditor at the Gannett corporate offices in Virginia, director of finance for Army Times Publishing Company in Springfield, Va., director of finance of FLORIDA TODAY, and group controller of the Gannett South newspaper group in Melbourne, Fla. In 2005, he was named president and publisher of the Tallahassee Democrat.

Other community involvements for Dorsey include the Florida Press Association, where Dorsey is immediate past chair, and the First Amendment Foundation, for which he is a Board member.
