Contestants Bite off More Than They Can Chew at Snooty's Lettuce Eating Competition

Five of the best and brightest Manatee County community personalities came together to go head to head in “Snooty’s Lettuce Eating Contest” at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton. The contest was part of an effort to raise awareness for the care that is required for the manatees that reside at the South Florida Museum as well as promote the Birthday Bash for Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee, happening on Saturday, July 19.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is thrilled to announce that the annual Season of Sharing campaign has reached new heights, breaking the $2 million mark. These funds will help more than 2,800 individuals in need to stay in their homes.

In November, members of the Athena Progressive Giving Circle of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County presented a check for $10,000 to Jewish Family & Children's Service to support its Operation Military Assistance Program (OMAP) for female veterans and their families.

At its October meeting, the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County approved more than $2.3 million in grants and scholarships. This total included more than $250,000 for scholarships: $180,000 for adult learner, theater and performing arts, and certified nursing scholarships, and $73,000 for multi-year continuing college scholarships. Another $750,000 came from living and legacy donor charitable funds at the foundation.

Booker High School will host an Etiquette Fine Dining Event to conclude its 2013 Summer Athletic Academic Enrichment and Life Skills Program at 2 p.m. on July 18 at Michael’s on East (1212 East Avenue S., Sarasota). The event will highlight the program’s focus on sportsmanship, nutrition, healthy eating, and fine dining etiquette.
