Q & A with Roberta Druif of the Animal Rescue Coalition

1.  Why is it important to collect donations of food and supplies for pets in our area?

It is important because in this current economic climate there are a lot of people who are having enough difficulty feeding themselves but will often put their own basic needs on hold for their beloved pets.  What has happened to make this an emergency situation?  The change in the economy has made this an emergency situation.  So many people are facing financial difficulties; more jobs are lost, more businesses close, more foreclosures take place than usual. In this chaotic environment it is very important to not forget the animals – they are the true innocents who are always ready to love us unconditionally.  (Click here to see what the staff of the Community Foundation did to help!)

2.  What will the donations we collected mean for ARC and for the animals you protect?

ARC will distribute the food and the supplies to some of our smaller rescue groups such as Manatee Animal Network, Honor Sanctuary and Puffy Paws Kitty Haven as well as some of the foster families who would otherwise be unable to foster for us.  ARC also will give dog food to two homeless people who have pets.  It is estimated by the National Coalition for the Homeless that between 5% and 10% of homeless people have dogs and/or cats.

3.  What message would you like to give pet owners who might be in economic difficulty and unsure what to do?   What are their choices?

Please remember that your pets are entirely dependent on you.  Reach out if you need help and don’t give up. Never leave your animal behind if you have to leave your home.  Instead please go to a shelter or call ARC for advice.  We are lucky to have a community with several places to turn to in an emergency – All Faiths Food Bank (
www.allfaithsfoodbank.org) and Resurrection House are both wonderful organizations.

4.  What can people do to help if they want to donate money or supplies going forward?

ARC can always accept cash or supply donations to contribute to our programs as well as to assist other local animal welfare organizations.  Additionally, if people want to become more involved, ARC regularly needs volunteers for the Foster Program as well as the Feral Cat Program – please call ARC at 957-1955.  Animal shelters, rescue groups, and other organizations providing assistance can, of course, always accept donations.

One last thing that people can do to help in these stringent times is to spay and neuter their pets.  Spaying and neutering not only creates a longer, healthier life for your pet but prevents pet overpopulation.  With fewer dogs and cats born, fewer animals will have to face homelessness and suffering.  ARC offers no-cost and subsidized spay/neuter surgeries to income-eligible families.  Please call 957-1955 ext. 4 for more information.  Click here to visit the ARC's website.
